Learning Norwegian via Trump: “Hvordan sier du «shithole country» på norsk?”

Not to get sucked into politics, but Trump’s alleged comments about immigrants from “Shithole countries” were apparently paired with comments about wishing that there were more Norwegians immigrating to the U.S.A.

In terms of a reality-check, there was a piece in the Atlantic that nicely covered why that isn’t likely to happen–(spoiler: Norway is one of the few countries in the world that consistently beats Canada (yes, and the U.S. too) on UN Development index, happiness rankings and other measures).  Still, I was curious to see what Norwegian people were saying about this chapter of current events— how would you even say “shithole country” in Norwegian?

From the looks of things, I wasn’t the only one asking this kind of question–Newsweek put together a funny article with multilingual translations of “shithole country”, as used by journalists around the world.  It’s definitely worth a look; however, since Norwegian wasn’t on the list, I was on my own.

After some creative back-and-forthing between Google Translate and Google search (some of my initial searches were dead ends), I had my answer: the headlines below even include grammar patterns that I’ve learned through Duolingo Norwegian, so it was a win all around.  Without further ado, here is some of what I found (fyi–yes, shit=dritt):

“Trump vil ikke ha innvandrere fra «drittland», men fra Norge” (Trump does not want immigrants from “shithole countries”, but from Norway.)

“Trump vil ha flere innvandrere fra Norge, ikke «drittland»” (Trump wants more foreigners from Norway, not “shithole countries”)

“Avis: Trump vil ikke ha innvandrere fra «drittland» – vil heller ha folk fra Norge” (Newspapers: Trump does not want immigrants from “shithole countries”, would rather have people from Norway)

Who would have ever imagined that Trump commentary would be part of my Norwegian learning experience, but there you go…..  Dette bilde på Trump Tower er akkurat hva jeg tenkte. Jeg vil helst innvandre til Norge enn Amerika!

  1. For a starter: There is a difference between ‘county’ and ‘country’, And I believe Trump (personally I’ve named him ‘Grump’) is talking about the country? He’s probably ignorant to the other word? And we’ll have to be content with the fact that he seems to have understood that Norway is not the capital of Sweden! 🙂
These days he’s making an ass of himself, proclaiming a full success in the meeting with his NATO allies .about the goals of future defence budgets even if no such agreements have been made!
Also his encounter with North Korea was reported to have been an outstanding success even if the North Korea so far has not destroyed one single rocket? Instead US intelligence reports indicate that they are enriching uranium as never before. And Grump har read the reports!
Still he claims success! What does it take to get him to see the world like it really is? I wonder?
And somehow, I don’t believe it has anything at all to do with languages . . .

I dropped by only to check whether you were still active on the net? Registrered as a ‘follower’ to oiur blog nearly a year ago, I was kind of curious as we don’t deal in words, but in photography! And there must be several hundreds you have not seen . . .? You’re marked for a final check out by the end of July this year.
    Cheers.

    • Hi Seenorway! Your pictures are captivating and you’re still on my follow list— if you’re hoping for more Norwegian, I was diving into the language as part of a project and don’t have enough interaction with Norwegian speakers to make a good go of it. I’d like to visit in a couple of years and will revisit the language then.

For the time being, I’m actually taking a linguistics course (just for interest) at the university where I work— your note was timely because I did have a thought the other day that I should post a bit of what we’re going through in the course.

      All the best,
      Raymond

      • Thanks for your respons, Raymond, and I’m impressed over your language acchievements, however, the main reason for my contact was as follows:
Over the last year I’ve been monitoring everyone visiting or being connected to my blog. At the start I had more than a thousand followers, which after a thorough check proved to be less the 200! You may just image what happened to the rest!
My pictures are always open and available to everyone wanting to see them, but being a ‘followers’ is something different. They have asked to be alerted whenever I post something new. And they do! Then I expect to see them a little more than a couple of times a year seeing that I post 200-500 new pictures every year.
        Cheers.
