interviewing language learners

Profiling successful adult language learners in Edmonton: “What’s YOUR story?”

Can I interview you about the language(s) you’ve learned?  Specifically, I’m searching for people in Canada who grew up speaking English and later learned to speak another language as an adult.

If you are someone who has achieved some level of success in learning to speak another language, I would be very grateful to have an opportunity to meet with you and hear about your experiences.

The profile that I’m looking for at the moment is someone who:

a) grew up in Canada speaking primarily English;
b) started learning another language as an adult; and
c) now speaks the language well enough that they feel confident enough to use it in a workplace setting.

A few of the questions that I’d like to be able to ask you include:

  • What inspired you to choose the language you did–or did fate choose it for you?
  • How did you learn–did someone ‘teach’ you?
  • What kinds of study strategies work for you– and which don’t?
  • Are you still ‘studying’ somehow, or have you already reached your major goals?

Interview #1: Matthew (Mandarin)

Interview #2:  you?

If you’re willing please send an e-mail to raymond (- /at/ -) wordsummit.com.   Hopefully we can figure out a time to either meet for coffee (on me!) or perhaps just chat over the phone.  I have a job and a family, so my schedule isn’t exactly wide open; however, I’m confident that we can work something out!

If you know of other language learners who might be willing to share some of their experiences, I’d appreciate it if you could pass them a link to this page!

Best wishes for 2011!

Raymond
